This week from the
Paradox Gaming Network
I want to be able to say it was a productive week, but I’d be lying. The last 48 hours have been productive, but the rest of my week was spent finishing off Battletech so I’m glad I got that one in the bag before the Bless hoopla started. Let’s just jump right into Bless
Fumbling on the 1 yard line...twice...in one week
Ok so NeoWiz went from heros to well, less than heroes in one week.
First and foremost, I want to preface this with a disclaimer. What I’m talking about is the company and some media & public relations mishandlings, not anything on the game itself. The game we will get into later this month when it releases on Steam.
So, this week was the big Media week for Bless. They made their Emissary announcement on Wednesday and they had their big Press Conference in San Francisco on Friday. Let me get the good out of the way.
We know the dates, the game goes into Early Access on 30 May, which puts the 2 day head start on 28 May. We know the founder’s pack prices are $40/$70/$200 and that the base game costs $30. If you want more details, check out the Bless video I did this week as I break it all down in traditional format. You can get that on YouTube, my homepage or https://youtu.be/4JNhjIZMKTw.
So that’s the good, we finally have some details. Now for the bad, NeoWiz didn’t do so hot this week with some fumbles. First and foremost they said that Sodapoppin, a Twitch Streamer with 1.9M followers would be joining the Emissary Program. Turns out Chance didn’t even apply to the program, that someone registered as him. So this was some major egg on the face. Then, from the the rest of the roster, they seem to make some very strange picks for the rest of the Emissaries. They have people who applied as a joke, people who have no experience with MMORPGs, and people with no experience making video game content all in their Emissary program. I talk about this in my video on Bless and from my Friday Stream, but if you want to come out with a strong Content Creator program then you really need to have a strong Content Creator program, and my personal opinion is that by not double checking with a headliner before announcing him, and without having quality people in your line up,you fumbled.
Now as a full disclaimer, I did apply to the Bless Emissary program and I was not selected. I didn’t really expect to be accepted into the program as I think when I applied I had under 1,500 YouTube subscribers. If people want to think I’m salty or disgruntled, they can have that opinion, I just make the full disclaimer because that’s how I roll.
The second fumble for Neowiz this week was their press conference. Now, if you are following Bless you have seen this press conference in one shape, form or another. They invited 15 streamers to come to San Francisco, to do some game play demo, some interviews, get a press briefing, etc. All I can say is that it was bad. Neowiz did not do an official stream of the initial presentation, they rotated people through the room, the room had technical difficulties, they did one off interviews sorta of sidebar things and what’s more is they left people with more questions than answers.
The big questions are when will you officially announce what is in premium membership and when will you reveal what is actually in the cash shop. At 16 days out, I would hope these decisions are made and ready to go.
Anyway, if you are interested in Bless, I highly recommend this week’s Bless video just for informational purposes.
Nothing much this week
I didn’t do much with Ashes this week. I did work on my personal FAQ a little bit, which is the document I use to answer questions for people. You can find the link to it on the Ashes of Creation page on the home page, or you can find it here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1grKCa1EqsivII5mzsYve1TFc_NS6ucQOSiuH251Mijs/edit
I use this as my personal reference sheet but some of you might find value in it.
I will say that a couple of Ashes creators did some good work this week with interviews with Steven. Hopefully this week I will have a chance to dissect those out and see if any of the meat in those interviews applies to stuff people that work with me have asked about.
If you are interested in Ashes of Creation, I’m going to shamelessly ask that you register for the game using my referral link (https://www.ashesofcreation.com/ref/Jahlon/)
The reason why is that I will get 15% of all your purchases back, which will give me a bigger pool of money to do giveaways with. This is quite literally the simplest way to support Paradox. Costs you nothing above and beyond what you pay to the game (sub fee, cash shop purchases, etc) anyway.
Since I didn’t do a video this week, I want to keep the transparency open, the Paradox Gaming Network is up to 105 referrals for Ashes with $204.75 in the kitty, with a couple of outstanding tickets to get cleared up. So thank you to everyone for all the support.
Gaming Network News
So still working on the T-Shirt Idea, however, I have to give made kudos out to my friend Kalei who put together a great image for me. It really made me smile. I may actually have this printed and posted on my side wall.
I also released Episode 3 of the getting started with streaming and video making series. At this point I think I’m going to hold off doing any more footage with these as it's not generating the discussion I had hoped for. Views, I’m not worried about views on this series, but at this point maybe I need to just hold off before spouting advice.
I’m also happy to report that the May Sweepstakes is up and it is running. You can enter that here: https://goo.gl/forms/TAEdMdlES3LPzvaE3
Life's little ironies
It is always ironic when you post a blog entry about not chasing metrics, and then that following week you totally explode on your metrics.
The way it stands right now we need to pick up only four more subs this month and that will put me on the hook for my final $10 giveaway either an APEX or a gift card. After that, the next benchmarks are going to be the yearly goals. We seem to be doing very well growing without having to do contests at narrow intervals.
Bless has certainly been good for the channel. Bless now represents the #2 and the #5 videos of all time views on the Paradox YouTube. Yesterday’s Bless video represents what I grade my success by, and that is does a video get a number of views in a 24 hour period that exceeds the total number of YouTube subscribers. Right now that is easy since we have less than 2.5K subscribers, but that number grows every day, which is another thing that put a smile on my face. In fact, in the last 24 hours we have grown 3% and I’ll tell you what I wouldn’t mind having a month of days that we grow by 3% daily.
Good shows even without a stable game
I have to say that the Twitch shows are doing very well considering I don’t really have a game to be playing and I’m stumbling around in Guild Wars 2 more as a tourist then a content creator.
The Wednesday night show ended up hitting an average of 14 viewers with 63 unique viewers and 9 unique chatters. So it wasn’t the busiest of nights, but it's nice to know I have loyal supports who come and hang out even if they don't’ talk much. The Friday Show did a lot better while we were talking about Bless and pulled an average of 26 viewers, with 137 unique viewers and 35 unique chatters. Now those are numbers I like a lot more. I want people to pop in and out, ask some questions, talk a little bit.
Now, what does this do for the future of the channel? Yeah, we have a long road back to stats that reflect worthiness of Partner status, but, if we did it once with Archeage we can do it again with Bless, Camelot Unchained, Ashes of Creation, wherever we go as a community.
Join us Wednesdays at 2100 EDT and Fridays at 1300 EDT.
So a big thank you to my Patrons at Patreon, they are going to be responsible for the financial backing of my giving away two copies of Bless this month. One will be given away via Twitch, which will be on my Friday show on June 1st, and one will be given away via YouTube also in that first week of June. Stay tuned for that.
